Empowering Deaf Leaders to Become Equal Participants in the Society

Empowering Deaf Leaders to Become Equal Participants in the Society

This workshop is designed to train Saudi Deaf leaders on the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and how to apply this international instrument in the national framework. Topics cover quality education in sign language, equal access to information and communications, full participation in all aspects of life, improved recognition of Saudi Sign Language and increased respect for Deaf people, sign languages and Deaf culture as positive part of Saudi society.

The workshop aims to increase knowledge and understanding of Deaf Saudi leaders on human rights and the importance of collaboration with different stakeholders such as organisations of persons with disabilities and the government of Saudi Arabia. It also increases the capacity of Deaf Saudi leaders to become more active participants in cross-disability efforts to contribute to national CPRD implementation and monitoring efforts.

The outcomes expected from the workshop are that Deaf Saudi leaders would become more aware on their rights, particularly sign language rights set in the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities such as access to education through the medium of Saudi sign language, official status of Saudi sign language and professional Saudi Sign Language interpretation.
